In September, Books & Music participants will hear about the first female percussionist in Cuba - Millo Castro Zaldarriaga - by listening to the award-winning book Drum Dream Girl by Margarita Engle. In 1932, at the age of 10, this brave Chinese-African-Cuban girl broke a traditional Cuban taboo against female drummers. Children and families will learn some basic Cuban dance steps; find out about congas, bongos, and timbales; play a name game; enjoy this beautifully illustrated book; and make music together. Ages 3 to 11.
