Introduction to Bonsai: Starting, Developing, and Growing Bonsai

The Fairwood Branch Library is hosting a monthly series of three FREE presentations on bonsai, the art of growing and shaping miniature trees, by Lowell Tilley, founder of the Gulf Coast Bonsai Foundation. For the second presentation on Saturday, October 3, Lowell will discuss Starting, Developing, and Growing Bonsai. Topics will include the variety of plants to use, pots, soil, fertilizers, potting, and re-potting. The presentation will include bonsai samples, visual aids, and recommendations for further reading.

Lowell Tilley is originally from Fort Payne, Alabama, and has been a resident of Baton Rouge since 1977. He holds a BSEE degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) and has a professional background in the aerospace, consulting engineering, and petrochemical industries. Introduced to bonsai in the early 1990s by Howard Merrell, Lowell has since become deeply involved in the community. He is the founder of the Gulf Coast Bonsai Foundation, a Past President of the Louisiana Bonsai Society, and a Past President of the Inter-Civic Council of Greater Baton Rouge. Additionally, he is a member of the Greater New Orleans Bonsai Society, American Bonsai Society, Bonsai Societies of Florida, Lone Star Bonsai Federation, Kiwanis International, Friends of Rural Life Museum, and LSU Burden Gardens Friends. He has attended numerous bonsai conventions, workshops, and demonstrations, and has taught bonsai classes privately as well as through LSU Leisure and LSU OLLI Continuing Education.
