Join seed advocate and Utopian Seed Project founder Chris Smith for an engaging conversation about the importance of seed diversity and its role in creating more resilient regional food systems. Drawing from his work with heirloom crops, agricultural biodiversity, and climate resilience, Chris will explore why saving and sharing seeds matters-and how ordinary gardeners can help preserve the incredible diversity of our food.
Bring your seeds! Stick around after the talk for an informal community seed swap. Bring extra vegetable, herb, flower, or other garden seeds to share, and take home something new to grow.
Bio: Chris Smith founded Utopian Seed Project, a seed focused non profit working on regional agrobiodiversity and climate resilience. His book, The Whole Okra, won a James Beard Award in 2020. In recent years, he received the Organic Educator Award from Organic Growers School, was named a Champion of Conservation by Garden & Gun, and joined Southern SARE's AG Leadership Program. In 2025, Chris received an Appalachian Foodways Practitioner Fellowship to recognize and support his work with seeds. His second book, Saved by Seeds, will be published by Chelsea Green Publishing in 2026. Learn more at utopianseed.org
